Balloons over the Bluegrass Returns!

Mark your calendar for one of Boyle County’s most anticipated summer events. Balloons Over the Bluegrass returns to the Danville-Boyle County Airport on Sunday, August 9, from 4-9 PM for an evening filled with family fun, great food, live entertainment, and, weather permitting, the breathtaking sight of colorful hot air balloons filling the Kentucky sky.

Admission is free, parking is easy, and all are welcome. Gather your friends and family and join us for an unforgettable celebration at the Danville-Boyle County Airport!

Hot Air Balloons

The hot air balloons are the stars of the show, and watching them prepare for flight is an experience all on its own!

Balloon crews are expected to begin arriving around 5:30 PM, when you’ll have the opportunity to get an up-close look as they unload, inflate, and prepare their balloons for takeoff. Feel the burners roar, watch the balloons come to life, and see the pilots and crews as they get everything ready for launch.

Weather permitting, we anticipate the mass balloon launch around 7:30 PM. There’s nothing quite like watching colorful balloons lift off against the Kentucky sky, and we can’t wait to share that moment with you.

Tethered Balloon Rides

Want to experience a hot air balloon for yourself? Tethered balloon rides will begin once the balloons are fully inflated and conditions allow.

Balloons are anticipated to arrive around 5:30 PM with rides beginning around 6:30 PM

  • $15 per person
  • No reservations or sign-ups required
  • Simply join the line and wait for your turn.

Please note that tethered rides are also weather dependent and may be delayed or canceled if conditions are not safe. We will be making announcements on weather conditions, rides and balloon launch from the music stage throughout the event.

Weather & Balloon Updates

Let’s address the elephant in the room, hot air balloons are extremely weather dependent.

Unlike many outdoor events, hot air balloons require very specific weather conditions to fly safely. Pilots carefully monitor wind speeds at the ground and at higher elevations, along with changing weather patterns throughout the day. Even if the weather feels pleasant on the ground, conditions higher in the sky may not be suitable for flight.

Generally, balloons need light, steady winds (typically less than 8–10 mph at launch), no nearby thunderstorms, and favorable atmospheric conditions to safely inflate and take off. The final decision to fly is always made by the balloon pilots, with safety as their top priority.

While we can’t control the weather, we can keep you informed. Our team will provide updates throughout the afternoon and evening regarding wind conditions, launch timing, and any delays or cancellations through our event announcements and social media channels.

Come hungry! Balloons Over the Bluegrass features a fantastic lineup of local and regional food trucks serving everything from barbecue and burgers to sweet treats and refreshing drinks. Whether you’re craving dinner, dessert, or just a quick snack while you wait for the balloons to launch, there’s something for everyone.

Entertainment & Activities

The fun doesn’t stop while you wait for the balloons. We’ve packed the afternoon with entertainment and interactive experiences for the whole family to enjoy from the moment you arrive.

Live Music

Sit back, relax, and enjoy live music throughout the evening, presented by the Art Commission of Danville-Boyle County.

  • 5–7 PM: Live music from local band, Heavy Holler, performing classic hits you know and love.
  • 7:00–9:00 PM: Music from DJ

Whether you’re grabbing dinner from a food truck or finding the perfect spot to watch the balloons, there will be great music setting the soundtrack for the evening.

Static Displays

Get up close with an impressive lineup of vehicles and aircraft! Explore static displays featuring big trucks, airplanes, and helicopters, organized by the Danville-Boyle County Airport, along with a race car display courtesy of Ponderosa Speedway. These displays are a favorite for kids and adults alike and offer plenty of great photo opportunities.

Runway Foam Party

4:30-6:30 PM

Get ready to make a splash—without the water! New this year, Bubbles & Bounce is bringing a colorful Runway Foam Party to Balloons Over the Bluegrass.

Watch the foam cannons transform part of the runway into a sea of fluffy, colorful foam where kids (and kids at heart!) can jump, dance, and play. It’s a unique, high-energy experience that’s sure to become one of the festival’s biggest highlights.

Community Mural

Create something special together during Balloons Over the Bluegrass! Stop by the Community Mural Project and add your own creative touch to a one-of-a-kind mural led by local artist Kristan Paynter. Whether you’re an experienced artist or simply want to leave your mark, everyone is welcome to participate. As each visitor adds their own personal touch, the mural will come to life as a lasting reminder of this year’s festival and the community that made it possible.

Fun All Evening Long

Whether you’re dancing to live music, checking out the displays, cooling off in the foam, or simply soaking in the festival atmosphere, there will be plenty to see and do before the balloons take to the sky. Arrive early, explore everything the festival has to offer, and enjoy an evening of unforgettable family fun!

Directions & Parking

We know one of the biggest questions each year is, “What about parking?” We’re happy to share that we’re making several improvements to help get everyone in and out of the festival as safely and efficiently as possible.

Two Entrances for Easier Access

In years past, all festival traffic entered through Airport Road. For the second year in a row, attendees will also be able to access the event from Hustonville Road, helping distribute traffic and reduce congestion as guests arrive and depart.

Our goal is to make your experience as smooth as possible from the moment you arrive.

Expert Traffic Management

New this year, we’ve partnered with Central Seal, a trusted local road construction company that has been serving the Danville community since 1979. With extensive experience managing traffic around road construction projects, their team is bringing that same expertise to Balloons Over the Bluegrass.

Central Seal will oversee traffic control throughout the event to help ensure a safe, organized, and efficient flow of vehicles before, during, and after the festival.

We’re also excited to welcome back ADA Parking, whose experienced parking attendants will once again be helping guests find parking quickly and safely.

Accessible Parking

Accessible (ADA) parking will be available and can be accessed from either event entrance. Simply let one of our parking attendants know you require accessible parking, and they’ll be happy to direct you to the designated parking area.

Follow the Signs

As you approach the airport, please watch for directional signage and follow instructions from traffic control personnel and parking attendants. Their guidance is designed to keep traffic moving and get everyone to the fun as quickly as possible.
