Originally constructed as a stone house in 1790 and expanded as an antebellum plantation house in the 1840s and 1850s, Chaplin Hill Bed and Breakfast, at 4221 Perryville Road in Danville, is a popular retreat on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.
As you approach by the long, tree-lined drive, you’ll be impressed by the stateliness of the house and grounds, and once inside, you’ll enjoy the beauty of carefully-curated antiques chosen from the time the house was constructed and expanded.
But Chaplin Hill isn’t a museum, with velvet ropes to keep guests away. It’s a comfortable and welcoming home.
In the mornings, you’ll be welcomed with a bountiful, family-style breakfast. Linger at the long, hand-built table in the dining room, with morning light filtering through nineteenth-century-style draped curtains and twinkling on the fine china and silver, or tuck your hands around a mug of richly-brewed coffee in Chaplin Hill’s boxwood garden as you enjoy the cool of the morning and the sounds of Bluegrass birdsong.
Then head out for a day of events and sightseeing. Chaplin Hill will be ready to welcome you back for a graceful afternoon and evening when the day winds down.
Chaplin Hill’s common area, with its buttercup-yellow walls, deep, beaded crown molding, full bookcase, fireplace, and soft leather sofa and chairs, is the perfect place to settle in for a quiet read or a good chat. Or enjoy the spacious veranda, with its slate-gray flagstone floors, wide-spaced columns, cozy seating groups and bright baskets of seasonal flowers, not to mention its lush and tranquil views of the rolling hills and distant mountain peaks of Central Kentucky.
Also coming this fall will be a bricked area with a fire pit, for toasting marshmallows or just enjoying cozy, firelit conversations.
At bedtime, retire to one of Chaplin Hill’s charming guest rooms, where gently-faded quilts, Tiffany-style lamps, rocking chairs, glowing wood floors and vintage bathroom décor combine with modern conveniences (including free Wi-Fi!) and comfort for a perfect night’s rest.
Chaplin Hill’s owners and innkeepers, Jay Krumeich and Holly Wood, are retired clergy from Illinois who fell in love with the Danville area and decided to settle here. When they found this historic house advertised online, they were instantly captivated by its beauty. And with their background of 37 years in the ministry, they looked forward to opening their hearts and doors to guests just as they had to their congregants.
Holly says, “Our favorite part of this new endeavor is the wonderful people that we are meeting. They arrive as strangers and leave as friends!”
